Tikal National Park, located in the northern region of Guatemala's Petén department, spans an impressive 570 square kilometers. The nearest significant town is Flores, the capital of the Petén department, situated approximately 60 kilometers to the southeast. The capital city of Guatemala lies about 300 kilometers to the south. At the heart of the park lies the ancient city of Tikal, once the center of one of the most powerful Mayan states. From the 3rd century to the end of the 9th century, Tikal dominated the Maya region economically, politically, and militarily, with a population estimated between 20,000 and 90,000 at its peak. During this time, Tikal maintained active trade and communication with other advanced regions in Central America, including the great city of Teotihuacán in present-day Mexico. However, by the 10th century, Tikal experienced a significant decline, leading to its eventual abandonment.
