Travel Guide to Sainte-Chapelle
Sainte-Chapelle, located on the Île de la Cité in Paris, is renowned for its stunning stained glass windows, often considered among the most beautiful in the world. Built in the first half of the 13th century, this royal chapel exemplifies Gothic architecture with its elegant design and intricate details. The chapel features 15 tall and narrow stained glass windows that adorn the nave and apse, complemented by a grand rose window added to the western wall in the late 15th century. Remarkably, nearly two-thirds of the original 13th-century stained glass has survived, making it one of the best-preserved collections of its kind.
To fully appreciate the beauty and brilliance of the stained glass, a visit on a sunny day is ideal, as the sunlight illuminates the vibrant colors. The windows in the nave measure 4.7 meters wide and 15.35 meters high, while those in the apse are 2.1 meters wide and 13.45 meters high. Each window is intricately designed, with the western rose window boasting a diameter of 9 meters. Dominated by shades of blue and red, the stained glass creates a light and airy atmosphere within the chapel.

Despite suffering damage during the French Revolution, the windows have been restored, adhering to a specific iconographic program. The three windows in the eastern apse depict scenes from the New Testament, including the Crucifixion of Jesus, while the nave windows feature Old Testament motifs. The chapel was commissioned by King Louis IX to house relics, including the Crown of Thorns, making it a significant site in medieval Christianity. After its consecration in April 1248, Sainte-Chapelle has remained a symbol of Gothic architectural achievement.
Visitors can explore Sainte-Chapelle from March 1 to October 31, between 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM, and from November 1 to February 28, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with ticket sales closing 30 minutes before closing time. Evening visits are available from May 15 to September 15 on Wednesdays, with the chapel remaining open until 9:00 PM. Note that the chapel is closed on January 1, May 1, December 1, and December 25.
