Travel Guide to Giola Lagoon
Giola Lagoon is one of the most beautiful natural attractions on the Greek island of Thassos. Located on the island's southern coastline near the village of Astris, the lagoon is a naturally formed rock pool connected to the Aegean Sea. Despite its relatively small size, Giola has become one of Greece's most photographed coastal landmarks thanks to its crystal-clear water and spectacular setting.
Unlike traditional beaches, Giola is carved directly into coastal rock, creating a circular natural swimming pool filled with seawater. The lagoon measures roughly 15 metres across and is surrounded by smooth rocky cliffs that rise several metres above the water.

Travel Guide to Giola Lagoon
Because the lagoon is relatively shallow, the water warms much faster than the surrounding sea, making it especially popular during the summer months. The contrast between the turquoise water and dark coastal rocks creates one of Thassos' most iconic landscapes.
Giola is famous among adventurous travellers for swimming and cliff jumping. The surrounding rocks provide several natural platforms where confident swimmers can safely jump into the deep blue water below.
Many visitors simply relax on the surrounding rocks, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere or photograph one of Greece's most unique coastal locations. Early mornings and evenings are generally quieter and offer the best lighting for photography.
Giola is only one of many attractions on Thassos, Greece's northernmost large island. The island offers mountain villages, olive groves, scenic hiking trails and more than twenty beautiful beaches.
Popular nearby beaches include Paradise Beach, Golden Beach and the famous Marble Beach (Saliara). Visitors can also explore traditional villages, rent boats, enjoy fresh seafood and visit the island's many viewpoints overlooking the Aegean Sea.
The area surrounding Giola combines rocky cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation and panoramic sea views. Nearby hiking paths provide excellent opportunities to explore the coastline and enjoy spectacular sunsets over the Aegean.
Although Giola itself is relatively small, its dramatic natural setting makes it one of the most memorable stops for anyone visiting Thassos.
Giola can be reached by car before continuing on foot along a rocky path. Comfortable footwear is recommended, particularly during hot summer days when the rocks can become slippery. There are limited facilities directly at the lagoon, so visitors should bring drinking water, sunscreen and swimming gear. Because the site is entirely natural, preserving the environment is important for future visitors.
