Travel Guide to Matmata
Matmata, a small village in central Tunisia, gained international fame in 1976 when the Sidi Driss hotel was featured as Luke Skywalker’s home in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope." The village reappeared in the franchise in 2002 for "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" and has also served as a backdrop for popular video games like "Call of Duty." Interestingly, the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars universe is named after Tataouine, a nearby town.
Nestled in the Qābisi governorate, Matmata is predominantly inhabited by Berbers, who have preserved their unique way of life. The village is renowned for its traditional troglodyte dwellings, which are partially underground homes carved into the earth. The origins of these homes are not precisely known, but they are believed to have existed since Roman times, passed down through generations.
